Re: Bishops Shun Notre Dame
by
Anonymous
Hello Father Jenkins,
In my opinion, "The Vagina Monologues" is not something that Notre Dame should be further hosting. I think it will do Notre Dame credit to cancel the proposed forthcoming March hosting, and not to engage in any further hostings of "The Vagina Monologues" from this point forward. Academic freedom is one thing, but the hosting of vacuous efforts to right societal attitudes toward women's sexuality and abuses thereof is another, because of the vacuousness and arguably even wrong-mindedness of this particular effort.
Your prayerful consideration in this regard is no doubt ongoing, and will be appreciated. You might view yourself as being caught at cross-purposes in this decision. But after due reflection, are you really caught at cross-purposes to the extent that you are motivated to come down on the side of Notre Dame playing host to TVM again?
You are in a better position to think this through than I. If ND does indeed again host TVM, there are many of us who would appreciate having an explanation of the reasoning that underpins that decision. Can a persuasive argument be put forth? I think not, but you might disagree.
Best wishes, and yours in Notre Dame,
Tom Schriber, ND '57
