Re: Re: Bishops Shun Notre Dame
by Nancy Danielson
Now I realize why some of us are so confused as to what determines Catholic Identity in a University. The following is a direct quote from the Land of Lakes Statement on the Nature of the Contemporary Catholic University: " To perform its teaching and research functions effectively, the Catholic University must have a true autonomy and academic freedom in the face of authority of whatever kind, lay or clerical, external to the academic community itself. To say this is simply to assert that institutional autonomy and academic freedom are essential conditions of life and growth and indeed survival for Catholic Universities as for all universities." The problem is that the word autonomy, by definition, means having the right or power of self-government or simply stated, existing independently. To be Catholic and autonomous is an oxymoron. To be Catholic, one must be faithful to the Magisterium of the Church. If one is not in Communion with His Church, the Church that Christ Has Founded, the Catholic Church, one can not be Catholic. The essential condition for survival for all Catholic Universities, schools, etc., is Fidelity to Christ and His Church. Let us all Pray that Notre Dame has the courage to remain Faithful to His Church.
