Re: V-Monologues as Farce
by Jerry Beckett
I sent this email to Bill Dempsey back in July after reading his letter of July 10: _____________ Howdy, Wow. Not only are the defenders of the "Vagina Monologues" morally misguided, they're also apparently completely full of crap. I had to read the following passage a couple of times just to make sure that I wasn't missing anything: "Homoeroticism is seen as wrong or unnatural because it interferes with, violates, the superior status of men." Um, right. There are a lot of reasons I find "homoeroticism" repellant, and "it interferes with, violates, the superior status of men" isn't even in the Top 25. Does the person who made this quote even know any heterosexual men? Or does academia provide such an insulated culture that you can pretty much assert any theory you want, and if it is sufficiently insulting to men, it goes unchallenged? Did a prominent professor really compare the VMs to "Confessions"? I read "Confessions", and I don't remember any articulating orifices. Apparently Augustine thought his pen was a good enough communicator, and didn't need any help from just beneath the waistline. And just what in the hell is a "penis culture"? And since when does the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit have physical male organs? Yeah, I know Jesus had one when He was on earth, but as I recall, it didn't figure prominently in His teachings. Is there some value in reducing absolutely everything to human sexual organs and desires? Lastly, "the Notre Dame moan". Well, it wouldn't be Notre Dame without someone complaining about parietals. Was I the only student in ND history to have never complained about parietals? Prior to transferring to ND, I spent a year at a state university working as a security guard in a co-ed dorm, so I thought parietals were a good idea. Some of the crap I saw in that year would curl your nose hairs. And was I the only person to notice that every ND girl had at least one "Thank God for parietals" story? I keep hearing that the Church is so obsessed with sex, but you have to read through a good chunk of the Catechism before you get to anything about sex. The VM folks? That's all they seem to think and talk about. Keep up the good work!!! John Gerard Beckett '95
