Re: Father Jenkins's "Creative Contextualization"
by Jerry Beckett
While I am part of Project Sycamore and enthusiastically support its mission, a couple of things about the cover article deserve critique: 1. "Gnostic Notre Dame"? Is this type of labeling really going to help the cause of those who would like to preserve and enhance the Catholic identity and mission of Notre Dame? While the worry that Dr. Cavadini expresses is significant and in need of correction, is labeling the entire university as "Gnostic" either accurate or helpful? Does it not discount the efforts of Dr. Cavadini and other truly Catholic educators (and those non-Catholic faculty that truly support the school's mission)? 2. "The Vagina Monologues may be symptomatic of an alienation of Catholic universities from the Church". This is something I've thought for a while, that the Monologues are a symptom of the problem (alienation of Catholic universities from the Church), and not the problem itself. However, much energy and ink is spent in battling over the Monologues, and I believe that it is a short-sighted, and ultimately losing, tactic. The demise of the play would do nothing to increase the % of committed Catholic faculty, nothing to enlighten the current faculty (and outside culture) as to the benefits of truly Catholic education over and above that of a secularized education, and nothing to combat the continued "Ivy envy" that seems to have guided many of ND's faculty and curriculum decisions over the last 20-odd years. Address and improve these aspects of ND, and silly and vulgar annoyances like the Vagina Monologues would die on the vine for lack of support.
