Re: Re: ND Website Undermines Catholic Teaching
by
Bill Dempsey
There is question, of course, as to how representative ND Watch is of the faulty. It is worrisome in that connection that the Administration was unwilling to take even the modest action of requiring it to get its own domain and handle its own e-mail and do away with the ND copyright. If the group is of no consequence, why would the Administration stand back? Still, one may hope that, at least as to rejection of fundamental Catholic moral teaching, this is a minority voice.
As to putting the ambition to be "a research institution that can be taken seriously," however, and as a help along that path sidelining "confessional affiliation" except as "window dressing," the site does seem uncomfortably close to the both the Baylor 2003 study (in which a majority of the faculty said religion shouldn't be taken into account at all in hiring) and last year's Faculty Senate declaration that "the University should not compromise its academic aspirations in its efforts to maintain its' Catholic identity." If religious affiliation is more than window dressing, it is fair to wonder what a Catholic university is to do in the top tier of research institutions comprising the AAU when the AAU promotes embryonic stem cell research. No Catholic institution is a member now, with the Catholic University of American having withdrawn several years ago. No wonder, perhaps.
