Re: Notre Dame Commencement: As It Should Have Been
by pclash
Nice summary! I didn't do as good a job when I responded to my priest about how the events went but here is my abbreviated account: Fr. Dave, There were about 10 there from Dayton, at least that we met up with. It was my second trip to Notre Dame and it is really a beautiful university. The student rally, outdoor mass and key note speakers held by ND response was quite an event and so huge that it was hard to believe that there was a graduation going on elsewhere on the campus. Fr. Frank Pavone conducted a commencement ceremony at the grotto with the graduates who chose not to attend their own graduation ceremony. There were so many people at ND for the event that we were asked (the hundreds of us at the rally in the south quad) to stay put and watch the event over a live video feed to a jumbo screen. Dayton parishioners sponsored an hour at the ND response eucharistic adoration in alumni hall chapel and also protested at the main entrance to the university. Obama publicly relented (words only) to reinstate conscience clause protection for people of good conscience (Catholics and other Christians) who will not participate in medical procedures related to abortion. Bishop D'Arcy and others have vowed to heal the breach between ND and the Catholic church but I won't be holding my breath. ND has decided to side with those who kill babies and don't see anything wrong with that. It's truly sad to see so many people who are so narcissistic and calloused about abortion. They just can't be bothered and even act offended. I was not very active in the pro-life movement before now but this sad commentary on the non-cohesiveness of the Catholic church really resonated with me and my wife. I believe that I am now going to be active in the pro-life movement. I'm dissappointed with the church and hope we're not on our way to becoming as compromised as the Episcopal church. It seems that the bishops are largely ignored by non-clergy and clergy alike and the vatican is mum about it all -- apparently trying so hard to build bridges with Obama that no offense is too great, no sin too mortal. Thanks for your support, Paul Lash
